Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

So I started reading Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn this month because I had seen recommendations from a few Youtubers I enjoy including Tanya Burr and Meghan Rossette!

This ever enticing thriller is centred around a husband and wife, Nicolas and Amy Dunne both ex-writers who lost their glossy New York jobs as a result of the boom of the internet. Both have complex personalities which tend to clash with one another. Gillian Flynn writes in the 1st person and alternates between the perspectives of the Amy and Nick characters, so we as the reader can really see what makes them tick!

Nick is the mommas boy people pleaser, who keeps his real feelings from ever reaching the surface, whereas Amy, an only child and focus of her parents children's book series Amazing Amy has tried her whole life to be the person everyone else expects her to be. It is clear from the beginning, that the couple are not happy in their marriage however it seems to be Amy who wants to work things out, Nick retreats into himself and avoids the situation completely.

On the morning of their 5th anniversary, Nick returns home to find that Amy has disappeared and the image of the front room suggests a struggle has occurred. There is no sign of Amy and no-one has seen her, they live in a small town in Missouri so this is unusual. Thanks to the relative wealth of Amy's parents, a massive search and investigation is started. As the investigation starts to gain some momentum, more and more evidence comes to light which suggests that Nick has something to do with her disappearance. The two have an anniversary tradition where Amy creates a treasure hurt for Nick which marks out important landmarks and memories between them. He begins to follow the treasure hunt and the notes attached to each clue are incredibly personal and honest, he starts to fall in love with his missing wife all over again! While battling with the vultures that are the press, the police and the reduction of people who believe him, Nick starts to investigate on his own desperate to clear his name and find his wife.

That is as much of the story as I'm going to paint out but I must worn you, I was unable to put down this book. So if you have anything pressing this week/month just know that once you start you cant stop until you find out what has happened to Amy and what are the secrets Nick is hiding behind his polite good man routine?

This novel is full of new developments, unexpected twists and the deepest thoughts of those living within a unhappy marriage. There is some controversy over the ending, however I was very satisfied with how it ended. If you follow the main themes of marriage, how unhappiness can create all types of crazy feelings and inner thoughts I think the ending in very fitting.

So go and read this book, seriously you will thoroughly enjoy it! Also if like me you like to read the book before you watch the film? The movie adaptation of Gone Girl is coming to cinemas in the UK on the 30th September so get reading.
